Elementary School Coach Resources

This page provides a breakdown of everything available for elementary coaches through the AUDL.

Curriculum & Tournament Support

  • ES Resource Packet - this is a comprehensive guide to elementary debate, with explanations on the format, individual debate skills with activity ideas, speech templates, and resources for the year’s topic.

  • AUDL YouTube - the AUDL’s YouTube channel includes playlists with curated videos for elementary students and coaches. Videos include a “demonstration debate” modeling the general structure of an elementary debate round, along with various videos on how to craft and deliver an argumentative speech.

    • Please note that many of the resources are designed for middle and high school debate, which uses a different format and different topic. Videos that are not indicated to be for elementary debate or Argumentative Speech Bowl (ASB) are less likely to be relevant for you and your students.

  • Site Visits - scheduled 45-minute sessions where the AUDL will send staff/and or Emory students to meet with your school in-person or virtually to work on whatever you’d like. Common ways elementary coaches use site visits include going over debate structure/what to expect, help write or give feedback on constructive speeches before a tournament, and incorporating feedback between tournaments.

    • Each school is guaranteed 2 site visits per semester.

    • Schools that primarily have the debate club meet as an extracurricular will typically book site visits during an after-school practice, though some schools that have debate as a class may book during the school day.

Paperwork/Forms

  • Tournament Registration Form - this is completed before each tournament to let the AUDL know which students are debating together (in teams of 3-4) and the names of judges (who can be coaches and/or parents) for your school

  • In-person Programming Waiver - any individual affiliated with your school (students, coaches, judges, and observers) who will attend an in-person tournament needs to complete a waiver for the year. You can bring signed waivers to tournaments or upload them via Google Form.

  • Debater Registration - this is a form to be completed by students to help the AUDL collect accurate information about the students we serve

AUDL Communications & Schedule

  • Coach Emails - communications directly from the AUDL with reminders and updates regarding tournaments and resources

    • Emails include a link to an archive of all coach emails for the year

  • Calendar - lists all AUDL programming, including all elementary debate tournaments for the year
